The individual responsible for last week’s assault on a synagogue in Manchester, UK, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals, reportedly declared loyalty to the Islamic State, according to police.

Authorities revealed that the attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie, made a call to emergency services during his lethal October 2 attack to express his allegiance to the terrorist organization, as stated by counter-terrorism officials in a report published Wednesday (early Thursday AEDT).

Al-Shamie, who was 35 years old, was fatally shot by police outside the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in Manchester. This incident occurred after he drove into pedestrians, assaulted them with a knife, and attempted to gain entrance to the synagogue.

Congregation members Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, died in the attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year.

Reports indicate that Daulby was unintentionally shot by a law enforcement officer while he and other worshippers attempted to secure the synagogue against Al-Shamie’s entry. Additionally, three men remain hospitalized with severe injuries.

Police said that Al-Shamie was on bail over an alleged rape at the time of the attack, but hadn’t been charged.

Law enforcement is currently investigating whether the attacker acted independently and has detained three men and three women in the Manchester area under suspicion of involvement in planning or executing acts of terrorism.

A court on Saturday granted police five more days to hold four of the suspects: men ages 30 and 32, and women ages 46 and 61.

An 18-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were released with no further action, police said.

Police haven’t identified those arrested or disclosed their links to Al-Shamie.
