Explosive details about California Democratic congresswoman Katie Porter’s abusive marriage have resurfaced amid her bid to become the next governor of California.

The 51-year-old single mom made headlines this week for angrily threatening to leave a local TV interview after a reporter questioned her about appealing to Trump voters in the Golden State.

Then on Thursday, a video emerged showing Porter swearing at one of her staff members during an online call with then-Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in July 2021.

‘Get out of the f***ing shot,’ Porter is seen yelling at an unidentified man in the background.

A third clip showing Porter becoming enraged at her staff in 2021 is also circulating online.

In the video, she becomes angry as her team struggles to adjust her lighting during a Zoom meeting.

‘I need the lights off… the bright lights,’ she says, growing more frustrated by the moment. ‘Not that dark,’ she remarks before turning off her camera and audio.

The incidents have focused new attention on Porter’s judgement and temperament.

Now, the Daily Mail has reviewed the Iowa-born progressive’s divorce papers from March 2013, which seem to depict a history of allegedly aggressive behavior that could date back over a decade.

The legal documents outline her separation from Matthew Hoffman and claim that she often yelled at him and their children, including an instance where she allegedly poured a bowl of hot boiled potatoes over his head. Porter and Hoffman eventually filed restraining orders against each other.

According to the documents, in the spring of 2006, Hoffman said Porter walked into their kitchen as he was making mashed potatoes for dinner and flew into a rage about the way he had cooked them.

As their oldest child Luke sat in the highchair, Porter allegedly looked at the potatoes in a ceramic bowl and yelled ‘Can’t you read the f***ing instructions!’

‘She then took the ceramic bowl of steaming hot potatoes and dumped it on my head, burning my scalp,’ Hoffman claimed.

The couple married in 2003. Porter was the sole breadwinner as a law school professor from 2009, while Hoffman stayed in their Irvine, California, home to bring up their kids.

Hoffman claimed that his ex-wife was prone to ‘extreme anger’ and had a ‘history of snapping and screaming at [him] and the children.’ He said she would even ‘claw and scratch her arms’ to make it look like he had attacked her.

Hoffman’s filing states that Porter frequently said things like ‘you f***ing idiot!’ and ‘you’re f***ing incompetent.’

‘She would not let me have a cell phone because she said, “You’re too f***ing dumb to operate it,”‘ he claimed.

Hoffman added that in 2012 Porter came home from work one day enraged that the house was not clean. He claimed that she slammed a glass coffee pot on the counter, causing glass shards to spray everywhere and cut him.

‘This house is a mess! You f***ing slob! You’re incompetent! What the f*** do you do all day!’ Porter allegedly said while the three kids were nearby in the living room.

Hoffman said Porter began picking up dishes and saying, ‘Look how f***ing dirty this is.’

When Porter first ran for a seat in Congress, she said that the divorce and restraining order had become a ‘whisper campaign’ among her opponents. At the time, Porter described herself as a victim of domestic violence.

‘To be made to feel like I’ve done anything wrong ― I’m just outraged,’ Porter told HuffPost in May 2018. ‘I have a wonderful track record. I’ve worked really hard to fight for consumers. That’s what I should be campaigning on.

‘But I’m not going to let anyone say that because a woman’s been a victim of domestic violence because she stood up for her children’s safety, she’s disqualified.

‘Who will run then?’

Porter alleged in her divorce documents that her marriage had been ‘troubled’ for four years leading to an eventual separation – and that Hoffman was violent with her on one occasion while she was flossing her teeth in the bathroom of their Irvine home in April 2013.

Hoffman allegedly grabbed her hands, ripped the floss out of them and threw it away, then punched the wall so hard the faceplate of a light switch shattered and the room went dark.

Hoffman reportedly told a judge that Hoffman was angry because Porter had been brushing her teeth too slowly.

Porter cried as she told HuffPost about more alleged abuse instances, including one time when Hoffman allegedly pushed her into a wall and called her a ‘dumb b****.’ She also alleged he shoved their one-year-old daughter across the kitchen in her high chair and threatened to kill himself.

Porter made her way into Congress as a US Representative for California from 2019 until 2025, and tried to make a bid for the Senate in 2024.

After leaving Congress in 2024, Porter was granted a restraining order against a former boyfriend, Julian Willis. She alleged that Willis had been hospitalized twice on involuntary psychiatric holds and had a history of abusing drugs and prescription painkillers.

Porter campaigned for the seat formerly held by Dianne Feinstein before she died, but lost the primary election.

Porter announced that she would be running for Governor of California in the 2026 election, after Gavin Newsom finishes his two four-year terms.
