BROADVIEW, Ill. (WLS) — ABC7 is watching to see what happens next with National Guard troops in the Chicago area.

A federal judge temporarily blocked the deployment to our area, but the Trump administration has already filed a notice of appeal.

The first significant weekly protest outside the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility following that ruling is set to begin on Friday morning.

According to the judge’s decision, the National Guard is prohibited from participating in operations for a two-week span, though it remains to be seen if they will still have a visible presence in Broadview.

Judge April Perry announced her ruling just hours after the Guard had arrived at the Broadview immigration facility on Thursday, with troops seen patrolling and gathering near the facility.

The Trump administration has maintained that a heightened military presence is necessary to safeguard federal property and employees, but the judge dismissed the government’s assertions of an imminent public uprising as unconvincing.

The White House reacted to the judge granting a temporary restraining order, stating that “President Trump will not ignore the lawlessness affecting American cities and we anticipate this decision will be overturned by a higher court.”

Judge rules fencing surrounding Broadview ICE facility must come down

Meanwhile, a judge has ordered the removal of a fence surrounding the Broadview facility.

Federal government lawyers contended that the barriers erected across Beach Street were essential for conducting operations and ensuring the safety of vehicles and personnel following clashes that arose during protests against ICE actions in operation “Midway Blitz.”

The village of Broadview said the fence was put up without village approval, and it blocks emergency response.

The judge sided with Broadview officials.

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson issued a statement, saying, “This is a validation of local law and, most importantly, a decisive win for public safety. The judge’s decision confirms that the illegal fence constructed by ICE is not only a clear defiance of Broadview’s ordinance but an unacceptable and escalating risk to our Beach Street businesses, their customers, and our first responders. The law of probability dictates that the danger increases daily. The court has spoken clearly and unequivocally. Now, it remains to be seen if ICE will respect the judge’s order and dismantle this hazard immediately, or if they will continue their pattern of defiance.”

Protest hours in Broadview are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, but it is not clear if demonstrators plan to adhere to the guidance.
