A fresh superfruit has made its debut in the UK, and it’s poised to revolutionize how we view healthy eating. The Red Berry Grape, identified as a natural crossbreed between a table grape and a rare wine grape, is gaining attention for its potential to aid in blood sugar management, control appetite, and support weight loss efforts.

Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, a member of the Red Berry Grape Advisory Board, stated: “Finding a way to enjoy sweet foods without negatively impacting blood sugar levels is a common goal. With approximately 4.6 million individuals in the UK diagnosed with diabetes, an estimated 1.3 million cases undiagnosed, roughly seven million experiencing pre-diabetes, and 64 per cent of the UK population being overweight or obese, it’s no surprise there’s a focus on managing blood sugars effectively. In fact, new real-world studies commissioned by the Red Berry Grape Advisory Board indicate a strong consumer interest in foods that can help regulate blood sugar levels.

“This research found that 60 per cent of adults have tried to cut back on the sugar in their diet and another 10 per cent recognise that they should.

“Now there is a new superfruit, the Red Berry Grape, which could support blood sugar balance, appetite regulation, and weight management. This might be a breakthrough for those eager to enjoy delicious foods while maintaining blood glucose control.”

Studies reveal ‘reduced glucose absorption’

Nichola explained: “Research evolving from the technology center AINIA in Valencia, Spain, reveals that even though the Red Berry Grape contains similar levels of fructose (a type of sugar in fruit that can raise blood sugar), these new grape varieties exhibit notably lower glucose uptake than traditional grape types. This is attributed to the Red Berry Grape’s richness in polyphenols and inclusion of fiber.

“These components together seem to form a distinct food matrix, which slows down glucose absorption in comparison to other fruits. This implies that although Red Berry Grapes are sweet, the polyphenols alter how these sugars are handled and absorbed in the digestive tract.

“This has significant effects on weight management, insulin reactions, and dietary recommendations regarding fruit intake, as many people limit fruits high in antioxidants due to fears about their sugar content.

“The new Red Berry Grapes called BOOMBITES Red Berry Grapes are unique – being a berry on the inside and a grape on the outside created as a natural cross between table grapes and rare wine grapes. They contain a range of polyphenols, antioxidants known as anthocyanins and resveratrol. All of these are naturally occurring compounds are found in various plants, most notably in the skin of grapes, blueberries and raspberries.

“Resveratrol, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has long been associated with the so-called French paradox – the observation that France has lower rates of heart disease despite a diet rich in saturated fats. And resveratrol is thought to account for various health and wellness benefits.

“Testing by researchers at the University of Murcia, found that BOOMBITES Red Berry Grapes had three times more resveratrol than blueberries when tested and comparable levels of antioxidants. This content of resveratrol helps to give BOOMBITES Red Berry Grapes their superfruit status.”

BOOMBITES Red Berry Grapes are available now at Marks and Spencer and Ocado nationwide for a limited time. The research referred to was based on an omnibus poll of 1,508 people aged 18+ conducted in July 2025. BOOMBITES added that antioxidant levels will vary dramatically, year on year, depending on the harvest, climate and environmental factors across all fruits.
