In September, former Republican Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, publicly opposed Proposition 50, a redistricting plan put forth by current Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom. Prop. 50 aims to discard the independently crafted Redistricting Commission maps and replace them with maps that would potentially advantage Democrats by merging rural areas with urban centers.
On Thursday, 37 out of California’s 58 County Sheriffs declared their firm opposition to this plan, saying a resounding “NO,” and were quickly supported by 30 city and county district attorneys. In a joint statement from DAs representing counties like Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Sierra, San Luis Obispo, Placer, and Yolo, they expressed concern: “In a time where ethics and integrity are visibly eroding, and where heated political rhetoric and violence are merely brushed off as errors, we must resolutely reject this proposal.”
Sheriffs across California see Prop 50 for what it is, a corrupt power grab.
It silences voters and rigs elections to protect politicians.

CA Sec. of State Owns Up to Big Mistake on Newsom’s Gerrymandering Special Election Ballots
A collection of 30 District Attorneys from across California, including those from the regions of east California and around the Tahoe area, have united to sign a letter expressing their disapproval of the proposed statewide redistricting initiative.
Proposition 50 proposes altering the Congressional district maps in California, aiming to maintain these changes until 2030. This redistricting effort was initiated in response to new congressional maps being developed in Texas.
In their letter, the DAs criticize Prop 50 for attempting to eliminate the voter-endorsed California Citizens Redistricting Commission, describing it as a move towards partisan gerrymandering.
“Proposition 50 threatens the democratic process by elevating political power over voter-approved reforms designed to enhance community representation. The independent commission has conscientiously redrawn electoral routes following the last two censuses. But, should Proposition 50 succeed, it would empower the State Legislature to clandestinely draft new congressional districts ahead of the next census—fragmenting communities and muting voters’ voices. This act undermines trust in the government and disregards the explicit mandate for independent redistricting,” the DAs expressed in their communication.
Thanks to the California legislature cramming through mail-in ballots, voting on this November 4 ballot initiative started this week, and the execution has been as disjointed and chaotic as the cobbled together measure. As my colleague Becky Noble reported:
With a little over a month to go before the election, mail-in ballots have already been sent to millions of voters. However, on Tuesday, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber admitted to a big mistake regarding those millions of mail-in ballots that have gone out. A labeling error in the Voter Information Guide mistakenly labeled the proposed new congressional district 27 as district 22.
Oops.
Incorrect district names, and incomplete or missing summary language. This is what $300 million of taxpayer dollars spent on a Newsom campaign gets you.
Our Prop 50 voter guides arrived this week and the maps are inaccurate. But we won’t get any corrections or even a delay while they sort it out. This is supposedly the most important vote in America BECAUSE TRUMP and they can’t even bother to get the voter guides right. pic.twitter.com/dZEtrlTSqA

That $300 million that could have been utilized to fund Prop. 36, a measure which Californians voted for overwhelmingly, and that would restore criminal penalties and public safety. The fact that Newsom is wasting money on this boondoggle rather than funding Prop. 36 was also not lost on the DAs.
The prosecutors also criticized the timing and cost of the special election, arguing that resources would be better allocated to initiatives like Proposition 36, which focuses on expanding drug treatment programs. They contend that Prop 50’s push for new maps is a response to redistricting moves in Republican-led states like Texas, but it comes at the expense of California’s commitment to nonpartisan redistricting.
The elected officials who are so staunchly defending the opportunity to vote on Prop 50 did everything they could to keep Prop 36 off the ballot. And after it passed with 70% these same electeds have refused to properly fund it. Welcome to #California

As if Newsom hadn’t fully given a middle finger to California voters, especially those who lost everything in the Palisades and Eaton Fires, on October 3, he vetoed a bill that would have raised the salary of California firefighters, claiming it was “too costly.” Prop. 50 is Newsom’s idea of money well spent — because the money is never his own.

While Newsom appears to be holding all the cards in terms of money, public sentiment appears to show that he is pissing off all the wrong people. Now if we could only get those people to cast ballots. As with the 2021 recall, Republican and no party preference voting has so far been sparse.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you want Prop 50 to fail, as it should, please get your ballots returned. pic.twitter.com/A7WLtzPklr

Newsom is using confusion and demoralization to his advantage. We can’t let him win.
A nice 9-minute explainer of why Prop 50 must be defeated just dropped.
