In the small town of Leland, Mississippi, police are delving into a tragic incident during the school’s homecoming weekend that resulted in two fatalities.

The two individuals lost their lives on the school premises on Friday night, as confirmed by Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White to The Associated Press. He refrained from disclosing whether the deceased were students or sharing further details regarding the incident.

“Right now we’ve still got a subject at large, but I can’t give specifics,” White said Saturday morning.

Authorities are seeking an 18-year-old man for questioning related to the shooting, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff urged anyone with information to reach out to either the police chief or the sheriff’s office.

The tragic event unfolded on the school grounds while the Heidelberg Oilers were hosting their homecoming football game on Friday night. The exact timing of the gunfire and its proximity to the stadium remain unclear. Chief White mentioned that he was present at the site on Saturday conducting investigations, and additional details could be made available in the forthcoming days.

The town of about 640 residents is about 85 miles (137 kilometers) southeast of the state capital city of Jackson.
