Joy, relief rule for now - but pitfalls could lie ahead for Gaza

Back in Israel, the hostages have returned safely, while Palestinians rejoiced at the release of nearly 2000 prisoners. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump took center stage with other world leaders in what was intended as a peace summit but occasionally felt more like a celebration.

The undeniable diplomatic success that enabled a second ceasefire during the two-year conflict between Israel, Gaza, and Hamas leaves many questions despite the widespread acclaim it has received.

This significant event, with its profound emotional resonance, is merely the first phase of a peace plan orchestrated by mediators like the US, Egypt, and Qatar.

The strategy involves an eventual participation of Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority, though this is something Netanyahu has historically opposed. However, it includes a requirement for the authority to implement reforms.

The plan calls for an Arab-led international security force in Gaza, along with Palestinian police.

Israeli forces would leave areas as those forces deploy.

About 200 US troops are in Israel to monitor the ceasefire.

The plan also mentions the possibility of a future Palestinian state, another nonstarter for Netanyahu.
