The renowned R&B and soul artist D’Angelo passed away on Tuesday, leaving a remarkable collection of soulful music after bravely facing cancer for an extended period, according to his family.

The influential music star, born Michael D’Angelo Archer, was 51.

“The brightest star in our family has dimmed his light in this world,” stated the family. They announced, “After a long and courageous fight with cancer, it is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Michael D’Angelo Archer, beloved by fans globally as D’Angelo. He has left us today.”

Loved ones said the artist’s music will endure.

The statement continued, “Although he leaves behind cherished memories with his family, we are forever thankful for the incredible and emotional music legacy he bequeathed us.”

“We kindly ask for privacy during this challenging time, but we welcome everyone to both mourn his departure and celebrate the gift of music he gave to the world,” the family added.

The singer came of age in the 1990s with his debut album “Brown Sugar.”

“Lady,” from that debut album, topped out at No. 10 in March of 1996 and spent 20 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
