Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law navigated divorces, financial struggles and relationships with her multiple children before her shocking death.

Carrie Elizabeth Romney, aged 64, was discovered deceased on a Los Angeles street near a five-story parking structure last Friday. It remains uncertain whether her death was due to suicide or an accidental fall.

Her spouse, George Scott Romney, commonly known as Scott, initiated divorce proceedings on June 10 after a marriage that lasted just over eight years, according to documents reviewed by the Daily Mail.

Carrie, who requested in the filing to restore her maiden name Dimas, was seeking spousal support which Scott did not agree to.

She has seemingly struggled with money in the past and filed for bankruptcy in December 2001 under the name Carrie Guzman, court records showed.

Carrie was the secondary petitioner on the Chapter 11 filing. Carlos Guzman, believed to be her former husband, was listed as the primary debtor.

Their case was resolved in March 2002, freeing them from liability for most of their debts, as stated by the records. Details about the exact amounts owed, creditors, and total assets were not available in the public records.

Carrie and Carlos had several children together. In a rediscovered birthday message apparently from their son, also named Carlos, she was revered as a ‘beautiful mother’.

He also made some peculiar statements in the footage, such as recalling his best memory of his mother during an incident when she was apparently under the influence of laughing gas.

The younger Carlos Guzman posted two YouTube videos 14 years ago to mark his mother’s 50th birthday.

Carlos, in a segment he referred to as the ‘favorite memory montage,’ shared a story he said happened in March 2001 after Carrie apparently underwent a dental procedure.

He placed a cotton ball in his mouth, in an attempt to ‘jog her memory,’ and said: ‘You came inside the house, drooling all over the place, just like a bumbling idiot.’

Carlos said he was referring to a time when Carrie had ‘Elvis Presley hair’ and ‘was high off laughing gas.’

‘You were high off nitrous oxide with your Elvis Presley haircut and sideburns that came down to here,’ he recalled, using his fingers to demonstrate the hairstyle.

‘That’s my favorite memory of my beautiful mother.’

In a second video posted to Carlos’s account, it is revealed that Carrie was not a fan of her children’s dangerous stunts.

The speaker, believed to be her son John, admitted that as a child he ‘used to always find the most dangerous possible way to have fun.’

John recalled the ‘funny’ time they were sliding down the stairs at their house, but decided to go further with their antics.

‘We found a suitcase and we’re like, “let’s put Elise in it and let’s slide her down the stairs.” So we did, and I remember she slid down pretty good, but then she hit the bottom and flopped over pretty hard.

‘You came out and you were mad. You smacked me pretty good, gave me a good little smack, and then we opened the suitcase and Elise was in there laughing.’

It is unclear who the Elise is that Carlos was referring to.

Carlos also described the three things that remind of his mother: Michael Jordan, Phoebe from the 90s sitcom Friends and the beach.

Carrie allegedly took him to see his first basketball game, with Carlos crediting her for getting him into the sport.

He claimed his friends compared her to Phoebe Buffay, Lisa Kudrow’s quirky character on the beloved show.

‘All of my friends think of you that way. You know, you’re a ditz, but you’re pretty intelligent… you kinda got that Phoebe thing going for you.’

He added that he often thought about her when he visited the beach because it is ‘calm’ and ‘I always think much clearer there and that’s kind of the same way I feel about you.’

He joked that he could tell Carrie anything, except stories of debauchery, like the time he said he got drunk at a strip club.

Carrie married Scott Romney on November 26, 2016. The pair had no children together.

They were never photographed in public together and appear to have kept their relationship private.

Neither were active on social media and Scott hasn’t been interviewed by a major media outlet since Mitt’s 2012 presidential campaign.

Scott separated from Carrie on May 25 and filed for divorce just a few weeks later.

He cited irreconcilable differences in the divorce filing and stated that most of the couple’s assets had been acquired individually before their marriage.

The Daily Mail has reached out to lawyers listed for both Scott and Carrie Romney for comment.

Mitt paid tribute to his sister-in-law after news broke of her unexpected death.

‘Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time,’ the former presidential candidate and Utah senator said.

According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, Carrie was found lying next to a parking garage in the LA suburb of Valencia. First responders arrived on the scene at around 8.30pm on Friday near the the town's shopping mall, near a local Hyatt Regency Hotel

Carrie was found lying next to a garage in the Los Angeles suburb of Valencia, according to the local medical examiner’s office.

Officers arrived on the scene at around 8.30pm on Friday near the the town’s shopping mall and a local Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Foul play is not suspected, according to homicide detectives.

LA County Sheriff’s spokesman Lieutenant Daniel Vizcarra told the Daily Mail: ‘We don’t know if it was suicide or accidental. There is not enough information to go by yet on what the coroner has given us so far.’

Vizcarra said a passerby called 911 and Carrie’s body was found by the parking structure that belongs to an apartment complex on the 24000 block of Town Center Drive in the city of Santa Clarita.

Her vehicle was found in one of the floors of the parking structure.

Vizcarra said investigators were working to obtain possible video footage around the area, which is also adjacent to a mall.

Footage from the investigation showed police tape cordoning off much of the parking lot with multiple police vehicles on scene.

‘Foul play has not been ruled out, but as of right now, there is no evidence of it,’ Vizcarra told the Daily Mail.

Carrie’s cause of death has been listed as ‘deferred’ while toxicology tests were pending, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner.

Mitt Romney, a two-time presidential candidate, comes from a large family with three older siblings, including his brother Scott. His wife Ann also has two older brothers, and together the couple share five sons.

Scott was described by The New York Times as the most visible of Romney’s siblings on the campaign trail in 2012.

He told PBS of his role on his brother’s campaign: ‘In 2006 he called me and said, “I’d like somebody with a little gray hair to help raise money, and I wonder if you’d be willing to help me.” And he asked me to help with him on his campaign. Since then, I’ve been doing everything I can to help his political career.’

Scott is currently an attorney at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn in Michigan and serves on several boards, including Compuware Corporation.

The Romney family is notoriously close and competitive, with The Washington Post once profiling the then-30 person brood’s annual family Olympics on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

Similarly, the former governor often championed his status as a family man when he ran for national office in 2008 and 2012.

Mitt’s lengthy career in Republican politics includes a defeat to Barack Obama in the 2012 general election.

In 2008, he lost the Republican Primary before endorsing the eventual presidential runner-up, John McCain. He was also the only member of his party to vote to convict Trump at both the president’s impeachment hearings.

Mitt served as governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and the junior senator from Utah from 2018 to 2024.

He retired instead of trying to run for re-election, having said the country’s many challenges call for a younger generation of leaders.

Mitt said the US would be better served if the two front-runners for their parties’ 2024 presidential nominations – Joe Biden and Donald Trump – stepped aside.

‘The times we’re living in demand the next generation step up and express their point of view and to make the decisions that will shape American politics over the coming century,’ Romney said in a news conference at the Capitol.

He said baby boomers like him are ‘not the right ones to be making the decisions for tomorrow.’

Mitt Romney’s most recent public appearance came at a forum at Drew University in New Jersey in late September.
