The Batman Villain You Completely Forgot Star Trek's George Takei Played

Space may have been the final frontier, but George Takei made a memorable detour in Gotham City for “Batman Beyond.” In this animated series, he brings to life the character of Mr. Fixx, who plays a key role in Terry McGinnis’ (voiced by Will Friedle) development into the futuristic Batman.

In the two-part series opener, “Rebirth,” Fixx serves as the loyal henchman to Derek Powers (Sherman Howard), the deceitful CEO of Wayne-Powers and one of the standout villains in “Batman Beyond.” Powers concocts a deadly nerve gas with the intent to sell to the highest bidder. When Warren McGinnis (Michael Gross), a Wayne-Powers employee, uncovers Powers’ malevolent plans — including testing the gas on a colleague — Powers orders Fixx to eliminate Warren. Fixx murders Warren, staging the hit to appear as if it was executed by the Jokerz gang.

This tragic event steers Terry onto a path of retribution, assuming the mantle of Batman. He ultimately confronts Fixx aboard a hovercraft transporting the lethal gas. The skirmish is intense and challenging; despite having the advanced technology of the Batsuit, Terry finds himself at a disadvantage against Fixx’s brute strength and charged brass knuckles. Yet, Terry capitalizes on an opening and forces Fixx into the craft’s control panel, sending it spiraling into the bay, where Fixx presumably meets his demise by drowning.

George Takei wasn’t the only Star Trek actor to appear in Batman Beyond

Takei’s portrayal of Mr. Fixx in “Batman Beyond” is fleeting but impactful, leaving a significant mark on Terry McGinnis’s life. Another “Star Trek” alumnus, the late Malachi Throne, also lent his voice to the series. Fans remember Throne for roles like Commodore Mendez in the original “Star Trek” and Pardek in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” both of which featured Takei’s Hikaru Sulu.

In “Batman Beyond,” Throne voices Fingers, a super-intelligent gorilla in the episode “Speak No Evil” of the third season. The plot follows Fingers’ escape from Gotham Zoo, causing panic among Neo-Gotham residents. As Terry attempts to recapture him, he learns from Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) that Fingers has been genetically altered with human DNA and seeks the poacher responsible for kidnapping his mother. Working together, Terry and Bruce aid Fingers in confronting the poacher before he chooses to return to his natural habitat.

The crossover between “Star Trek” and “Batman Beyond” is delightful, yet also reminiscent of the 1960s when “Star Trek” actors frequently appeared on the “Batman” series headlined by Adam West and Burt Ward. Even Batgirl actress Yvonne Craig guest-starred as Marta on “Star Trek.” Imagine Robin’s exclamation in such a scenario: “Holy franchise crossovers, Batman!”
