President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Hamas on Thursday, condemning the group’s actions amid a fragile ceasefire with Israel. Trump, taking to Truth Social, cautioned that continued violence by Hamas against fellow Palestinians would prompt the U.S. to intervene. “If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the Deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” he wrote. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump’s remarks mark an escalation in his rhetoric, following initial comments that seemed to minimize the unrest in Gaza. On Tuesday, fresh from his visit to Israel and Egypt, Trump dismissed reports of a brewing civil conflict, suggesting that Hamas had merely dealt with “a couple of gangs that were very bad.” He added, “That didn’t bother me much, to be honest with you.”

However, the situation took a turn as videos emerged online showing Hamas fighters allegedly involved in public executions. Under Trump’s proposed 20-point peace plan, Hamas was expected to disarm and relinquish control, a condition they have yet to fulfill. These recent events have further strained the already tenuous situation in the region.

In turn, Hamas members who wished to leave Gaza would be given safe passage to another country. Instead, Hamas fighters have been involved in violent clashes with rival Palestinian groups, as Israel’s forces have withdrawn.

During his Oval Office meeting Tuesday with Argentinian President Javier Milei, Trump warned Hamas that they needed to stick to the terms of the agreement. ‘They will disarm, and if they don’t do so, we will disarm them, and it’ll happen quickly and perhaps violently,’ Trump said.

He didn’t provide additional details on how he would accomplish that goal in Thursday’s Truth Social post. The president told CNN Wednesday that he would greenlight Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu taking further military action in Gaza if Hamas doesn’t abide by the bargain.

The US has sent 200 troops to Israel to help support the ceasefire, but they aren’t being sent into Gaza. Trump is already being widely heralded for bringing about the end of the Gaza war. The conflict began in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel that left at least 1,219 people dead.

Around 251 people were kidnapped in Israel by Hamas and brought into Gaza. On Monday, as Trump was headed to Israel, the 20 remaining living hostages were brought back.

Since then, Hamas has returned the bodies of nine hostages to Israel, claiming that’s all the remains it can transfer back. The bodies of 19 other Israeli hostages remain in Gaza.

Aid is also slowly making its way into war-ravaged Gaza, where approximately 67,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed since the start of the war. White House advisers told reporters on a call Wednesday that ‘there’s no intention to have the aid cut, as long as this deal holds.’
