PORTLAND, Ore. – The city is at the forefront of witnessing the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration, particularly in Portland.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are focusing on apprehending individuals residing illegally in the United States who also possess criminal records. In Portland, authorities have already arrested approximately a dozen individuals considered to be among the “worst of the worst.”

Oregon holds the distinction of being the first state to declare itself a sanctuary for immigrants back in 1987. Due to these sanctuary policies, the Department of Homeland Security reports that local law enforcement often disregards immigration detainers. This sometimes results in the release of violent felons, which in turn prompts ICE to conduct operations aimed at capturing these individuals who are unlawfully present in the country.

During a ride-along with ICE, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico was the focus. This individual, facing a removal order since 2023, has accumulated several felony charges, including assault. During the operation, another suspect was stopped and questioned, but after proving his legal status, he was let go.

Despite these operations, Oregon has the lowest rate of ICE arrests in the nation. Critics argue that these initiatives are excessive, highlighting that an estimated 65% of those detained by ICE do not have criminal records, as reported by the Cato Institute.
