The cybersecurity woes for Australian companies have claimed another victim, with over 1,600 customers of telecommunications providers Dodo and iPrimus falling prey to a recent data breach. This incident has affected both the company’s email and mobile services, raising concerns about the security of personal data.

The breach, which took place last Friday, was publicly disclosed yesterday by Vocus, the parent company overseeing both Dodo and iPrimus. In a statement to 9news.com.au, a Vocus spokesperson detailed that the breach involved unauthorized access to approximately 1,600 Dodo email accounts, resulting in unauthorized SIM swaps on 34 Dodo Mobile accounts.

According to a report by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) from June, Dodo and iPrimus together serve nearly 804,000 customers across the nation, primarily through their NBN services. This large customer base underscores the potential scale and impact of the breach.

This incident places Dodo in the spotlight as the latest telecommunications provider caught in a cybersecurity scandal. It comes on the heels of the serious issues faced by Optus, which is still dealing with the fallout from a devastating triple zero emergency service outage that tragically led to three fatalities.

It is the latest cybersecurity issue to hit an Aussie company; last week Qantas confirmed the data of up to 5.7 million customers had been exposed on the dark web.
In August, fellow telco iiNet admitted the data of around 280,000 customers m,ay have been stolen after a cybersecurity breach in the company’s order management system.

Dodo also becomes the latest telco to be hit by scandal, with Optus still reeling from its catastrophic triple zero outage that led to the deaths of three people.

As a result, millions of Optus customers are now considering leaving the telco, plunging it into further crisis after years of turmoil.
