French IV rallies Georgia Southern to 41-24 victory over Georgia State

In a thrilling encounter at Statesboro, Georgia Southern mounted an impressive comeback to secure a 41-24 victory over Georgia State on Saturday night. JC French IV played a pivotal role in this turnaround, throwing three touchdown passes, two of which came during a dynamic 21-point surge in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 24-20 as the final quarter began, Georgia Southern (3-4, 1-2 Sun Belt Conference) found momentum when Weston Bryan completed a 75-yard drive with a decisive 1-yard touchdown run. French then connected with Camden Brown for a 16-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 5-yard pass to Dalen Cobb, allowing the Eagles to decisively pull ahead.

French showcased his versatility by completing 17 of 22 passes, amassing 210 yards and rushing 12 times for an additional 85 yards and a touchdown. His performance was crucial in overcoming the deficit and securing the win.

Georgia State (1-6, 0-3) had a strong start, with Cameron Brown delivering a commendable performance, collecting 280 yards and a touchdown on 29-for-38 passing. He also showcased his running prowess, rushing 15 times for 120 yards and a score. Brown’s 15-yard touchdown run capped off an 88-yard drive, giving Georgia State an early 7-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Georgia Southern responded in the second quarter with French finding Camden Brown for a 20-yard touchdown pass, nudging the Eagles ahead 10-7. However, a 31-yard field goal by Liam Rickman saw the teams level at 10-10.

As the first half drew to a close, Cameron Brown’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Ted Hurst put Georgia State back on top, 17-10. Yet, Georgia Southern narrowed the gap with a strategic 46-yard field goal from Bryant, concluding the half at 17-13.

French had a 4-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter for a 20-17 advantage.

Rashad Amos answered with a 3-yard touchdown run and the Panthers led 24-20 after three quarters.
