In conjunction with the conference, Mayor Brandon Johnson has declared October 19 as Love Your Lungs Day. This proclamation underscores the significance of lung health and aligns with CHEST’s objectives of advocacy, education, and innovation in healthcare.

Dr. John Howington, the President of CHEST, discussed the pivotal role of this annual gathering with ABC7 News.

“Chicago’s declaration of Love Your Lungs Day is crucial for increasing awareness about lung health,” remarked Howington. “Lung cancer is the leading cancer-related killer for both men and women, while COPD ranks as the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It’s vital for individuals to prioritize lung health by avoiding smoking, minimizing exposure to pollution, and maintaining an active lifestyle.”

In a statement, Johnson said, “By shining a spotlight on respiratory health, Chicago stands alongside CHEST and raising awareness, promoting equity and supporting healthcare providers and their patients.”
