URBANA, Ill. — The University of Illinois Police Department has announced a significant breakthrough in the recent Campustown shooting investigation, resulting in an arrest.

An 18-year-old Urbana resident has been taken into custody in connection with the October 18 shooting, according to a news release from the UIPD. The incident, which occurred around 12:28 a.m., prompted officers to respond to reports of gunfire at the intersection of Fifth and Green Streets, where they discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, who required surgery due to serious injuries, is currently in stable condition.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the altercation leading to the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute involving several individuals. Notably, the victim has no ties to the university.

“Immediately following the incident near Fifth and Green streets, Champaign, UIPD officers and detectives quickly developed suspect information by obtaining eyewitness accounts and video footage provided by local citizens,” officials stated. The Illinois State Police played a crucial role in collecting evidence at the scene.
