Israeli police said a coffin carrying the apparent remains of a deceased hostage had arrived in Tel Aviv for identification amid diplomatic efforts in the region aimed at pushing forward the next phase of the Trump administration’s ceasefire plan.

The remains of a recently released hostage have been transported under the watch of Israel Police to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Abu Kabir, as confirmed by a police representative. Here, the process of identification is set to proceed.

In a prior statement, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) detailed that the deceased hostage was initially retrieved by the Red Cross in Gaza before being handed over to Israeli authorities in the conflict-stricken region.

This development follows the initial endurance of the US-mediated ceasefire in Gaza, which faced its first significant challenge over the weekend. Both Hamas and the Israeli military have exchanged allegations of violating the truce, while Israelis remain on edge over the postponed return of deceased hostages.

Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Knesset, emphasized on Monday the necessity of fulfilling the ceasefire agreement, including the repatriation of all deceased hostages, as stated by a Knesset spokesperson.

Diplomatic push continues

On Sunday, both Israel and Hamas reaffirmed their dedication to the ceasefire orchestrated by the Trump administration, despite Israel accusing Hamas of an attack that resulted in the death of two IDF soldiers, leading to a series of retaliatory airstrikes.

The architects of the ceasefire, including US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, engaged in extensive discussions with senior IDF officials in Tel Aviv on Monday, addressing the ongoing ceasefire arrangements in Gaza, according to an Israeli source familiar with the situation, as reported by CNN.

The source said the meetings took place in the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv, during which Witkoff and Kushner met with the IDF’s head of Intelligence Directorate, Major General Shlomi Binder, and the head of the Planning Directorate, Major General Eyal Harel.

Israel’s strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer and the Prime Minister’s military secretary, Major General Roman Gofman, also participated, according to the source.
