Efforts by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers and experts from Zoo Miami to capture and treat an injured crocodile in the Florida Keys have so far been unsuccessful.

In Key Largo, Florida, authorities are actively investigating a disturbing incident where a crocodile was found with a spear lodged in its head. The search is on for those responsible for this act.

Reports surfaced on Saturday around 11:45 a.m. in Monroe County, where an eight-foot American crocodile was sighted with a spear embedded in its head, prompting immediate attention from wildlife officials.

Despite the diligent efforts of FWC officers and Zoo Miami wildlife professionals to safely capture and treat the crocodile, the attempt did not succeed.

The public is being reminded that American crocodiles are classified as a federally threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As such, harming or harassing them is prohibited under both state and federal laws.

The FWC continues to monitor the situation closely and is appealing for any additional information that could help in resolving this incident.

Anyone with photos, videos or information is asked to contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922. Reports can be made anonymously, and tips that lead to an arrest or citation may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
