Effingham County makes fourth straight trip to state quarterfinals

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. — The Effingham County Lady Rebels have secured their place in the state quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year, following a hard-fought victory over Seckinger in the decisive Game 3 of the GHSA state playoffs’ second round on October 21.

The game started with Effingham County falling behind, as Seckinger scored three runs in the first inning. However, the Lady Rebels quickly responded by scoring two runs in their half of the inning, narrowing the gap.

A critical moment unfolded in the top of the sixth inning. Seckinger, trailing 5-3, loaded the bases with two outs. A hit towards the centerfield wall allowed two runners to score, leveling the game at five.

In a tense play at the plate, the runner from first was thrown out, a decision that sparked frustrations among Seckinger fans. Had the run counted, Seckinger would have gained a one-run lead.

The decisive play came in the bottom of the sixth when Effingham County’s third baseman, Shelby Zeigler, delivered a crucial line drive just beyond the reach of the Seckinger shortstop. This hit allowed Effingham’s sixth run to score, securing their victory.

Effingham County is now set to compete against Creekview in the Final 8. The games for Class AAAAA are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on October 29 at the South Commons Softball Complex.

Wayne County also heads to Columbus. The Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Allatoona, 8-4, in Game 3. Wayne County will play defending Class AAAA state champion Harris County in the state quarterfinals. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
