A man was apprehended late Tuesday night after crashing his car into a section of the White House’s security perimeter, according to a statement from the Secret Service on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 10:37 p.m. when the driver collided with the Secret Service vehicle gate located at the intersection of 17th and E Streets NW in Washington, D.C., near the White House, the official reported.

Officers from the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division swiftly arrested the suspect, who was subsequently taken to a hospital to receive mental health services, a law enforcement source informed NewsNation, a sister network of The Hill.

The Secret Service, in collaboration with local police, evaluated the vehicle involved in the incident and declared it “safe,” as stated by the agency.

This security breach takes place as construction continues on the East Wing of the White House, a project that involves a $250 million ballroom for President Donald Trump. The demolition work has been met with some criticism.

Earlier in the year, a toddler managed to crawl through the fence, mirroring a similar event in April 2023, where a child slipped through a metal gate and made it onto the North Lawn before being noticed.

A month before Trump’s second inauguration, another person was arrested for attempting to climb a temporary gate near the complex.
