The 22-day government shutdown is now the second-longest in US history

The longest government shutdown on record spanned 35 days during the first term of President Donald Trump.

As of Wednesday, the current government shutdown reaches its 22nd day, making it the second-longest in United States history.

The record-breaking shutdown occurred from December 2018 to January 2019 under President Trump’s administration.

On Wednesday, the Senate is set to vote for the 12th time on a short-term funding bill. However, the effort is expected to fail as Democrats remain firm in their stance against reopening the government without negotiating health care provisions.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged the President to discuss funding with Democrats before his scheduled trip to Asia. Nonetheless, Trump has stated he won’t engage with Democratic leaders until the government resumes operations.

While the House has been inactive for four weeks, a coalition of moderate Republicans has appealed to Speaker Mike Johnson. They have requested an urgent focus on the expiring Obamacare tax credit, but they emphasize that this discussion should wait until the government is back up and running.
