U.S. Defense Department Targets and Destroys Alleged Narco Vessel in Pacific Operation

On Wednesday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth revealed that the department executed a “lethal kinetic strike” targeting a vessel in the Eastern Pacific, which was suspected of carrying drugs intended for the United States.

In a post on X, Hegseth shared drone footage of the strike, stating that the boat was controlled by a “designated terrorist organization” involved in drug trafficking. The strike took place on Tuesday, according to his announcement.

“The vessel had two narco-terrorists on board when the strike was executed in international waters. Both were killed, and there were no casualties among U.S. forces,” Hegseth explained.

Since the end of August, the Defense Department has been actively targeting boats in the Caribbean that are allegedly run by narco-terrorists. This recent strike marks the first known operation in the Pacific region. These actions are a part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to combat drug cartels and curb the flow of narcotics into the U.S. Notably, in February, the State Department classified eight cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations” and “specially designated global terrorists.”

“Narco-terrorists intending to bring poison to our shores will find no safe harbor anywhere in our hemisphere,” Hegseth wrote. “Just as al-Qaida waged war on our homeland, these cartels are waging war on our border and our people. There will be no refuge or forgiveness only justice.”

The strikes have prompted scrutiny from lawmakers and human rights groups, who question the legality of these strikes and Trump’s authority to authorize them without approval from Congress.
