In a recent revelation, Dakota Johnson shared her biggest “red flag” when it comes to men, only four months after parting ways with Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin.

The 36-year-old actress and 48-year-old musician had been in a relationship for eight years before their surprising breakup was announced in June 2025.

During her appearance on Vogue’s Questions series on YouTube, Johnson was asked if she had any particular “red flags” to watch out for.

After a brief pause to consider, the star of Madame Web responded, “Men who wear flip flops in public. Run.”

Though Martin might not fit this specific deal-breaker, he is known for frequently going barefoot in public settings.

While they were a couple, Johnson seemed to embrace Martin’s unusual dislike for shoes, as they were spotted walking barefoot together in 2019 and again in 2022.

She and Martin were first romantically linked in 2017 following his 2015 divorce from Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, with whom he shares two children.

Martin and Johnson secretly got engaged several years later.

But in June of this year, Daily Mail confirmed that the couple had decided to part ways after nearly a decade together.

A source told Daily Mail at the time: ‘Their relationship has been over for a long time, they just haven’t been able to figure out to make it official.

‘Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much.’

The insider continued: ‘Breakups aren’t instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they’d get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren’t right for each other anymore.’

Daily Mail’s source claimed Johnson was ‘devastated’ that she would no long be around Martin’s daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, ‘as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them.’

The source concluded by hinting at a chance of reconciliation between the pair but insisted that ‘being separated will do wonders if [Martin and Johnson] were to have any type of future together.’

Johnson even embraced her ex’s bizarre aversion to footwear as they were photographed enjoying barefoot strolls in Malibu in 2019 and in 2022; the couple seen in 2022 

Daily Mail first reported trouble between the couple in August 2024 but a representative later confirmed they were still together.

The pair had a brief rumored split in 2019 which was alleged to be over Martin pushing for them to have children, but they quickly got back together.

Johnson’s Q&A with Vogue took place on set of her new cover shoot with Vogue Germany, which was released Wednesday.

While Johnson did not discuss her recent breakup with Martin in the candid interview, she did share insight on growing up as the daughter of Hollywood icons Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

Though she acknowledges the ‘incredible upsides’ of being a nepo baby, Johnson said that her parents’ celebrity was often scary and confusing for her as a child.

‘When I was little, there were times when it was really quite scary, and people would aggressively and physically try to get to my mom when we were just going to the supermarket or something,’ she recalled to the outlet.

‘If you accept that as normal as a little kid, it can lead to a lot of complexes. And then, of course, the fact that you’re in the public eye and the world knows about your private life in a way that’s very invasive, rude, and painful.’

Johnson, whose grandmother is Tippi Hedren and stepfather was Antonio Banderas, ‘grew up on set and was always surrounded by people who made movies.’

‘I always knew that my family’s profession was different than, say, my schoolmates whose moms went to the office every day,’ the actress noted.

‘That was a challenge because it’s hard to make and keep friends when you’re on the road so much as a kid. But I always just accepted it: This is what we do. It’s in our blood.’

Johnson had her 68-year-old mother to thank for her big-screen acting debut, at age nine, in her 65-year-old Spanish stepdad’s dismally-reviewed directorial debut Crazy in Alabama in 1999.

‘But I wasn’t allowed to work properly until I graduated from high school,’ Dakota noted.

At age 17, Johnson was anointed as Miss Golden Globe 2006 – an honor strictly reserved for nepo babies – in which the ambassador hands out trophies to winners and escort them offstage.

Unsurprisingly, Griffith was Miss Golden Globe 1975, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association officially discontinued the ambassadorship in 2022.
