Western Sydney University has admitted large amounts of personal data, including bank details, passport details and students’ visa information was exposed in recent data breaches.
In a statement to staff and students seen by 9news.com.au, university Vice Chancellor and President George Williams confirmed data stolen through an external system between June 19 and September 3 was behind two data breaches in August and earlier this month.
The first incident saw the data of around 10,000 former and current students released on the dark web, with the incident on October 7 seeing fraudulent emails sent to students and alumni claiming their degrees or ability to study at the university had been “revoked”.

Western Sydney University has announced it is actively reaching out to individuals affected by a recent data breach, providing specific details about the personal information that has been compromised.

The breach occurred when unauthorized access was gained through third-party vendors responsible for supplying IT services to the institution. This incident underscores the vulnerabilities inherent in relying on external partners for critical technological infrastructure.

In response to the situation, Williams, a representative of the university, has extended an apology to all affected students and staff. He emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing the breach’s consequences and offering necessary support to those impacted.

“I want to sincerely apologize for the impact this incident has had,” Williams expressed. “Please be assured that we are diligently working to resolve this issue and provide assistance to our community.”

He further urged everyone, including students, faculty, and alumni, who receive notifications regarding the breach, to follow the recommended actions. He stressed the importance of taking these steps, even if similar actions have been taken in the past, and encouraged utilizing available support services.

In an effort to protect the compromised data, the university has obtained an interim injunction. This legal measure restricts the dissemination, publication, and use of any information illicitly obtained from the university’s IT systems and network by a former student.
