Grimes recently left her fans puzzled after unveiling a new facial tattoo, which some have likened to a fungal infection. The 37-year-old musician, known off-stage as Claire Boucher, introduced the striking inking to her followers through a bare-faced selfie posted on Instagram this past Wednesday.
The tattoo features a circular design intended to mimic the appearance of a scar, elegantly curving across her temple and threading through her left eyebrow and eye. Despite its bold presence, Grimes revealed that the subtlety of the tattoo led to it going largely unnoticed by those close to her.
In her post, Grimes shared that she had been contemplating a face tattoo for nearly a decade. She expressed her admiration for the artist’s work, praising the ‘true beauty’ and ‘innovation’ it embodies.
Interestingly, the singer, who is a mother of three with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, admitted that neither her friends nor family picked up on the new addition. She humorously remarked, “Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol.”
However, Grimes – who shares three children with Elon Musk – admitted that the subtle design had gone unnoticed by her friends and family.

However, her followers were left divided over the tattoo, with many taking to the comments to compare it to ringworm.
They wrote: ‘I remember my first Ringworm..’; ‘THE RINGWORM?!’; ‘it’s the ringworm on her eye I think’.
‘Looks like a giant ringworm lool’; ‘I was just thinking “scars aren’t typically round on the face… that looks like ringworm” validating’; ‘RINGWORM?’

Ringworm has nothing to do with worms, but is a fungal infection — characterised by a ring-shaped red or silvery rash that may be itchy — and spread via human-to-human contact.
It comes just days after Grimes sparked backlash by including a reference to Charlie Kirk on the cover art of her latest album.
She announced the release of Artificial Angels on Friday last week, sharing the album cover on social media.
It is made up of a collage of numerous screenshots, including one of the Kirk memorial coin, which can be seen in the top right-hand corner.
Also included in the art was a grab of the meme coin for Iryna Zarutska, the Ukrainian refugee who was murdered in North Carolina in August aged 23.

Some social media users were immediately upset by the inclusion of the controversial figure on the cover and expressed their criticism.
However, others defended the singer by claiming that her inclusion of Kirk was an attempt at satire and about internet hysteria.
Artificial Angels is Grimes’s sixth album, following Geidi Primes (2010), Halfaxa (2010), Visions (2012), Art Angels (2015), and Miss Anthropocene (2020).
She was previously in an on-and-off relationship with Musk from 2018 through 2023 and shares three children with him, X Æ A-Xii, five, Exa, three, and Techno, also three.
The Tesla billionaire is known to be the father of at least 14 children and has been accused of creating and managing a ‘legion’ of secret babies, with the true total of his offspring unknown.
After Techno was born, Grimes sued Musk in September 2023 over parental rights to their children in a California court.

Musk allegedly fought to keep the hearing closed, asking for the documents to be sealed.
She claimed that Musk was withholding access to her kids and even prevented them from seeing their terminally ill maternal grandmother.
Musk then sued for for custody of the children he shares with Grimes in Texas, where his businesses are headquartered.
A Travis County Clerk has since confirmed that the Texas dispute had been settled, but declined to give further details.
In February, Grimes sent a panicked X message to Musk about one of their child’s ‘medical crisis,’ highlighting for the world that she was having trouble reaching him privately.
‘Plz respond about our child’s medical crisis,’ she wrote to her ex. ‘I am sorry to do this publicly but it is no longer acceptable to ignore this situation. This requires immediate attention.’
She added that Musk didn’t even have to respond to her but could contact her through a third party.
‘If you don’t want to talk to me can you please designate or hire someone who can so that we can move forward on solving this. This is urgent, Elon.’
Grimes went on to clarify that trying to reach Musk on social media was a last resort because he had not responded to her.
‘I’m not giving any details but he won’t respond to texts call or emails and has skipped every meeting and our child will suffer life long impairment if he doesn’t respond asap,’ she wrote.
‘So I need him to f***ing respond and if I have to apply public pressure then I guess that’s where we are at.’
