Two cricket players, whose names have been kept confidential, encountered a disturbing incident while walking from their hotel to a nearby cafe. Allegedly, they were followed by a man on a motorcycle who then engaged in inappropriate physical contact.

Cricket Australia swiftly reported the incident, leading to the arrest of Akil Khan. Local authorities managed to apprehend him using CCTV footage.

While in custody, Khan reportedly sustained significant injuries, including a suspected broken arm and leg, and was subsequently displayed in front of the media by the police.

Law enforcement officials informed local news outlets that Khan has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the criminal code, which address the use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, as well as stalking.

The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and ignited discussions about the safety of touring sports teams in India.

This event has also fueled political tensions, with officials trading blame over the perceived breakdown of law and order in Indore, a city located in central-west India.

State Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya called the alleged attack a stain on the country’s image, whilst another tried to reassure the public by pointing to Khan’s arrest.

The incident was described by Devajit Saiaka of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) as “condemnable but stray”, and said it would review security protocols surrounding travelling teams.

Australia is currently ranked number one in the world, and the team was in Indore for an important Women’s World Cup match against South Africa at Holkar Stadium.

The Australians easily defeated South Africa and advanced to the semi-finals, where they will take on India.
