Woman charged with attempted murder after firing shots at police

A woman from Tasmania faces charges of attempted murder following an incident where she allegedly opened fire on police officers executing a search warrant.

The police operation was part of an ongoing criminal investigation, with officers approaching a residence in Collinsvale, situated approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Hobart.

As the officers arrived in an unmarked vehicle and proceeded through the property’s gate, shots were reportedly fired in their direction.

Subsequent examination revealed a bullet hole near the wheel guard of their car.

Upon entering the premises, police apprehended a 37-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man without further complications.

Both individuals were found to be in possession of firearms at the time of their arrest.

“At this stage, investigators believe the residents did not realise it was police entering the property,” Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said.

The woman was charged with attempted murder and several firearms-related offences, whilst the man was charged with firearms offences as well as attempted aggravated assault.

Bodnar said no officer – or no resident – should be placed in such a situation.

“Regardless, it is reprehensible that our officers were placed at such risk while performing their duties,” he said.

“This incident could have had tragic consequences, and it was extremely fortunate that no one was physically harmed.”

The pair are expected to appear at Hobart Magistrates Court today.
