Federal SNAP benefits won't be paid in November: What happens next?

The United States Department of Agriculture has issued a stark warning, stating that the federal government will halt November food assistance distributions due to the ongoing government shutdown. “The well has run dry,” the USDA’s notice conveys, signaling a critical juncture in government operations.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), once known as the Food Stamp Program, receives its funding from the federal government but is managed by individual states. While the USDA’s contingency plan during a shutdown allows for the use of reserve funds to sustain SNAP for over a month, the current administration under Trump has decided against utilizing this option.

“As it stands, no benefits will be distributed on November 1,” the USDA notice highlighted, emphasizing mounting pressure on Senate Democrats.
