RICHMOND HILL, Ga. — The Richmond Hill softball team is on the verge of making history as they prepare to compete in Columbus with the hope of securing the school’s inaugural state championship in the sport.

Boasting an impressive 19-9 record, the Lady Wildcats have maintained an undefeated streak in the state tournament. They recently advanced past the second round by defeating North Gwinnett on their home turf.

Despite facing some of the more established teams in the bracket, such as East Coweta and Buford, Richmond Hill embraces their underdog status. They’re content to fly under the radar as they aim for success.

“It’s truly rewarding to witness the success across our sports,” said head coach Chris Jenkins. “Traveling to Atlanta, where the expectation was to win, and coming away with two victories was an incredible achievement,” he added.

Senior catcher Lily Welch echoed the sentiment, saying, “We definitely feel like the underdog. We’re the sole representatives from South Georgia heading to Columbus this year, and we believe people might underestimate us, which is exactly what we want.”

Richmond Hill is set to take on North Paulding in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament, with the game scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on October 29.
