An error has taken down a string of high-profile web services for the second time in a little more than a week.
Users across the world started reporting problems with multiple Microsoft services early this morning, including Microsoft 365, Outlook, Azure, Xbox and the popular video game Minecraft.

Microsoft Azure, the tech giant’s expansive cloud platform, encountered difficulties around 3 a.m., attributing the disruption to an “inadvertent configuration change.” This was identified as the source of the problem.

The “critical” issue was affecting network infrastructure in every region of the provider’s global network, Azure said in a status update.

To rectify the issue, the company announced it was suspending all modifications to the impacted component, Azure Front Door, and initiating a rollback to the most recent stable configuration.

“We are currently unable to provide an estimated time for when the rollback will conclude, but we commit to updating this communication every 30 minutes or as soon as new information becomes available,” Azure stated.

Users across the United States reported disruptions affecting various services, including major retailers like Costco, as well as companies such as Alaska Airlines and Starbucks.

In Australia, reports from Downdetector predominantly highlighted issues with Microsoft services, potentially due to the timing of the outage.

Similar to AWS, Azure represents a colossal cloud infrastructure with data centers globally, which numerous enterprises, both large and small, rely on to manage their services efficiently.

It hosts so much of the web that problems can have enormous impacts.
