'People are starving': Jacksonville restaurants step up to feed families as SNAP benefits freeze

In Jacksonville, local dining establishments are stepping forward to support families facing difficulties as federal SNAP benefits are paused due to the government shutdown.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As of November 1, SNAP benefits have been suspended amid the federal shutdown, prompting restaurants on the First Coast to extend a helping hand to vulnerable families. Several eateries are providing complimentary meals to children dependent on food assistance programs.

Maschall’s Kitchen, a family-owned Afghan eatery located on Jacksonville’s Southside, is joining the effort. Owner Syed Hashimi launched the restaurant six months ago as a tribute to his late father.

“My father passed away two and a half years ago, and this restaurant is my way of honoring him,” Hashimi shared. “We welcome everyone as if they are guests in our home.”

Hashimi, like many other local entrepreneurs, notes that the shutdown’s economic impact has influenced his business.

“Typically, we receive numerous orders, but I’ve noticed a decline lately,” he mentioned.

Despite the challenges, Hashimi remains committed to helping the community. He offers free meals for children and welcomes those who may be struggling.

“People are starving,” he said.

In response to the SNAP benefit freeze, DoorDash has launched an emergency food response, pledging to deliver one million free meals through food banks nationwide and waive delivery fees for 300,000 SNAP recipients’ grocery orders this November.

Businesses like Donatos Pizza are also offering discounts, including 75% off any pizza for Florida EBT card holders.

Meanwhile, Pie Heaven Bakery Café in Atlantic Beach near Naval Station Mayport is providing free chicken pot pies to military families affected by the shutdown.

For Hashimi, giving back is personal.

“My parents owned businesses here since ’84,” he said. “We’ve lived here for over 40 years. We’re fortunate enough to be here in Jacksonville. We don’t have a lot to give, but what we have, we give it to our community.”
