(NEXSTAR) – As a potential freeze on SNAP benefits looms, millions of Americans could find themselves at risk of scams, according to officials and experts.

Over 40 million individuals, including numerous children, are bracing for the cessation of food assistance come November 1. The federal government has announced that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will not be replenished in November if the government shutdown persists.

This situation creates an opportunity for scammers to exploit individuals who may be increasingly anxious about accessing their benefits, says Clayton LiaBraaten, a senior adviser at the scam protection app, TrueCaller.

“During the government shutdown, scammers are capitalizing on the fear of losing benefits to obtain personal information,” LiaBraaten explains.
