Bridge collapse in Eustis neighborhood prompts evacuations of homes

EUSTIS, Fla. – A neighborhood bridge in Eustis suffered a partial collapse Thursday night, leaving residents stranded and triggering the evacuation of nearby homes.

The incident occurred at Spring Ridge Estates, located off DeLand Road, shortly after Central Florida experienced unprecedented rainfall. Some areas recorded up to 19 inches of rain, causing significant flooding, particularly in Lake and Brevard counties.

This bridge serves as the sole access point for nearly two dozen homes in the community. Residents were advised to evacuate and cut off electricity to their homes due to the bridge’s impaired condition, which prevented emergency vehicles like fire trucks from crossing.

Authorities from the Eustis police department have deemed the bridge at risk of further collapse. Officers are currently stationed at the site to prevent any attempts to cross.

The road maintenance falls under the responsibility of the neighborhood’s Homeowners Association (HOA). A meeting is scheduled with city officials on Friday to discuss potential solutions and next steps.
