A fresh initiative aimed at safeguarding young people, akin to the checkpoints used during Schoolies events, has been introduced in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.

This coastal neighborhood is gaining popularity as a vibrant nightlife hub, boasting an expanding array of bars and pubs.

Positioned in Justins Park, the newly established “chill-out zone” will be manned by seasoned Gold Coast Youth Service staff. They will be on duty from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer season.

Cameron Kluger’s parents, whose son tragically passed away in September 2022 following an alleged assault in Burleigh, have welcomed this initiative.

“It’s certainly a positive step; had it been in place a year ago, the outcome for us might have been different,” remarked Sonia Kluger, Cameron’s mother.

Meanwhile, Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has refuted claims that the timing of this measure is a reaction to public disapproval over the limited hours of the new police beat, which operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

She said the initiative aims to provide a safe space for young people.

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has denied the timing of the initiative is intended as damage control following public criticism regarding the operating hours of the new police beat - 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

“There will be water, first aid supplies and somewhere to sit down and have a rest,” Frecklington said.

“Somewhere to sit down and recover while your Uber arrives.

“We know this model works in other areas on the Gold Coast.

“We don’t want intoxicated people getting themselves in trouble.”
