When Jonathan How’s alarm sounds at the crack of dawn, he’ll check the weather like most Australians before heading into work.

Unlike most professionals, his workday is governed by the whims of the weather, be it sunshine, rain, or hail.

Working in his “dream” role as a Senior Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne, How experiences this firsthand.

He vividly remembers Cyclone Alfred as one of the most hectic episodes in his career.

The cyclone wreaked havoc across southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales from February through March this year.

During this period, the bureau was tasked with keeping the public, media, and State Emergency Services (SES) updated.

“Our forecasts were evolving every hour,” How explained.

“So we needed to make sure that [updates] get out in time before the new one comes in.

“It can be a bit of a race against the clock.”

Severe weather can be dangerous and it’s important residents are aware of the latest warnings.

But How is careful not to cause unnecessary concern.

“We’re not here to cause panic or create drama,” he said.

“We just focus on what’s coming up in the facts and make sure people have the information they need and make sure that they can make the right decisions.”
