The Royal Australian Mint has unveiled a special coin to commemorate the 80th anniversary of World War II’s conclusion.

This unique coin showcases a design of red poppies arranged in a wreath, with each flower symbolizing a decade since the war’s end.

During World War II, nearly one million Australians served, with approximately 40,000 losing their lives, primarily in battles across Asia and North Africa.

Red poppies are widely recognized as a symbol of Remembrance, especially on November 11th—Remembrance Day—marking the end of World War I.

In addition to the poppy motif, the coin features a purple ribbon, representing mourning, dignity, and the sacrifices made, as highlighted by the Royal Mint’s Acting Chief Executive, Emily Martin.

“Through our coin designs, the Mint narrates Australia’s history, and this particular coin serves as a poignant tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of those who served,” Martin stated.

“By encircling the poppies with a purple ribbon, we acknowledge not only the sorrow and loss, but also the dignity and reverence that continues to shape how Australians remember this chapter in our history.”

Up to 200,000 of the $2 coins will be released into general circulation this week, but are also available to purchase.

A fine silver proof coin and a coloured uncirculated coin will be available from an EQL Ballot from today to Wednesday, whilst both will also be available from the Australian Royal Mint in Canberra from Thursday.

The silver proof coin will cost $90, whilst the uncirculated coin will cost $22.50.
