Orca pod seen hunting sharks with special 'paralysis' move

Researchers have unveiled stunning photographs showcasing orcas using advanced techniques to hunt great white sharks.

This particular group of orcas has been observed in the Gulf of California, where they focus their efforts on young great whites.

Prior to these findings, orcas preying on sharks were predominantly reported near South Africa, with a preference for larger, adult sharks.

Higuera explained, “The sharks are rendered helpless temporarily, enabling the orcas to consume the liver, rich in nutrients, and possibly other organs, leaving the remaining carcass behind.”

Analyzing the sharks’ wounds, scientists suggest that orcas may have perfected a unique method to induce this state, reducing their risk of getting bitten.

“This marks the first instance of orcas consistently preying on juvenile white sharks,” remarked Dr. Salvador Jorgensen from California State University, one of the study’s authors.

“Adult white sharks react quickly to hunting orcas, completely evacuating their seasonal gathering areas and not returning for months.

“But these juvenile white sharks may be naive to orcas. We just don’t know yet whether white shark anti-predator flight responses are instinctual or need to be learned.”
