Sheryl Lee Ralph celebrates 35 years of 'DIVAS Simply Singing! Raising Health Awareness'

LOS ANGELES — Sheryl Lee Ralph, the Emmy Award-winning star of “Abbott Elementary,” along with The DIVA Foundation, recently marked the 35th anniversary of “DIVAS Simply Singing! Raising Health Awareness.” This memorable event combined music, advocacy, and empowerment in a spectacular celebration.

For Ralph, the occasion also served as a heartfelt reunion with many of her long-time friends and colleagues from the “Dreamgirls” era. Ralph’s journey with the iconic Broadway production began during a period when she witnessed the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. This personal loss motivated her to establish The DIVA Foundation and the “DIVAS Simply Singing!” event as enduring tributes to those affected.

The red carpet was graced by stars such as Loretta Devine, Jenifer Lewis, and James Pickens Jr., all present to lend their support to the cause championed by Ralph.

In an interview on the red carpet, Loretta Devine reminisced about her longstanding friendship with Ralph, stating, “It all began back in the days of Dreamgirls when we lost Michael Bennett… the journey has been nothing short of incredible.”

Jenifer Lewis, who was part of the original “Dreamgirls” workshop and has maintained a close bond with Ralph over the years, expressed her pride in their shared history. She noted, “I’m proud of Sheryl. I’m proud of myself, Loretta Devine, and all the divas who have supported this cause over the years.”

James Pickens Jr. highlighted the unifying power of music, sharing insights from his wife Gina Taylor-Pickens, an original member of the “Dreamgirls” ensemble. He observed, “Music is a healing source that brings people together. It bridges all kinds of divisions.”
