ATLANTA () – In a heartfelt ceremony at the State Capitol on Thursday, Governor Brian Kemp, alongside First Lady Marty Kemp, paid tribute to Georgia’s veterans under the Gold Dome.

The event drew attendance from state legislators, members of the Georgia National Guard, and representatives from the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.

Governor Kemp emphasized that Veterans Day is a poignant reminder of the profound gratitude owed to those who have defended our nation’s liberties.

With Georgia being home to over 700,000 veterans, of whom around 40% are over 65, state leaders highlighted the importance of supporting veterans’ transition to civilian life. Efforts to increase access to mental health services and address PTSD were stressed as critical needs.

Governor Kemp remarked, “We’re cutting through bureaucracy to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families can secure meaningful employment in our state. Additionally, we’re boosting funding for PTSD research and treatment, addressing needs both during active duty and long after our heroes have returned to civilian life.”

He urged that Veterans Day should inspire not only remembrance but also active engagement in improving the lives of those who have served the country.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day proclamation in 1954, changing the name from Armistice Day — which originally commemorated the end of World War I.

Veterans Day is next Tuesday, November 11, a federal holiday honoring all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
