GAINESVILLE, Fla. — At around 3:00 p.m. today, officers from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the U.S. Marshals Service, attempted to serve a felony warrant on 38-year-old Ali Bayhan. The warrant was related to charges of making terroristic threats.
The law enforcement team surrounded a home located on the 1400 block of NW 35th Way, where Bayhan was believed to be present. Using a loudspeaker, they instructed him to surrender. Bayhan emerged from the house with a handgun visible in his waistband, but he reportedly ignored the officers’ commands. As he allegedly reached for the weapon, the officers opened fire, hitting Bayhan.
Emergency medical services were called immediately, and officers attempted to provide aid, but Bayhan was declared dead at the scene.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation into the deputies’ use of lethal force in this incident.
The deputies involved in this incident have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with ASO policy.
