Authorities in Indiana have launched an investigation following the tragic shooting death of a woman during a cleaning job on Wednesday.

When police arrived at a residence in Whitestown, they discovered Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velasquez, 32, with a gunshot wound on the front porch. According to WRTV, it’s suspected that de Velasquez mistakenly went to the wrong address for a cleaning assignment, leading the homeowner to shoot her from inside the house.

However, her husband claims they had the correct address and even verified it twice before approaching the home. Investigators rapidly determined that the couple was not attempting a break-in and were indeed part of a legitimate cleaning crew, as reported by the Indy Star.

The Boone County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that de Velasquez died from a gunshot wound to the head and has classified the incident as a homicide.

The Whitestown Metropolitan Police have completed their investigation and submitted their findings to Boone County prosecutors, who are tasked with deciding whether to file criminal charges. The homeowner’s identity remains undisclosed since no charges have been filed at this stage.

In response to circulating rumors, Whitestown police have dismissed the allegation that the homeowner involved is a local police officer.

“No officer—whether currently serving, retired, resigned, terminated, or otherwise affiliated with the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department or any other police department—resides at or has any personal connection to the location of the incident,” the department said in a statement issued to WRTV. “These inaccurate claims pose a serious safety risk to uninvolved officers and their families and must cease immediately.”
