The latest gaming venture, Horizon Steel Frontiers, is a collaborative effort between Sony and the South Korean gaming company NCSoft. A sneak peek video, showcasing over ten minutes of cinematic and pre-alpha gameplay footage alongside interviews with developers, reveals that the game will emphasize battling the enormous mechanical creatures familiar to fans of the Horizon series, with the added excitement of multiplayer engagement.

Neither Sony nor the PR firm representing NCSoft responded immediately to requests for comments. The promotional artwork for Steel Frontiers was initially uncovered by The Verge on a platform designed for sharing game assets with media and influencers. It seems the artwork was released prematurely, possibly ahead of an official announcement expected at the G-Star 2025 event in Korea. The site included a publicly accessible Google Drive link that contained the preview video. According to the information available, Steel Frontiers will be accessible on PC, iOS, and Android.

The preview video reveals players engaging with mechanical beasts while exploring vibrant natural landscapes and towering metal structures reminiscent of those in previous Horizon games.

Jan-Bart van Beek, studio director at PlayStation’s Guerilla Games, describes in the video, “Horizon Steel Frontiers is a comprehensive MMORPG crafted by NCSoft specifically for mobile devices. The game allows players to immerse themselves in this world anytime and anywhere. Set in the Deathlands, inspired by Arizona and New Mexico, players assume the roles of machine hunters. The frontier is shared with thousands of players, fostering a dynamic mix of cooperation and competition through hunting and resource conflicts.”

In the video, executive producer Sung-Gu Lee elaborates, “The essence of Horizon Steel Frontiers lies in the exhilarating experience of taking down massive machines. This was a key attraction of the original Horizon series, and we’re now expanding it into the MMORPG realm.” Lee adds that innovative game mechanics will include collecting dropped weapons from vanquished beasts for future battles.

The video also emphasizes the game’s character customization options. Unlike the previous series entries where players took on the role of Aloy, Steel Frontiers allows players to create and personalize their own characters, adding a fresh layer of personal involvement to the gameplay.

There’s no release date listed in the video, but Lee says that the team is working to make the game available “as soon as possible.”
