Washington — In a move to acknowledge the dedication of TSA agents during the recent government shutdown, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on Thursday that agents who demonstrated “exemplary service” will receive a $10,000 bonus.

Speaking at a press conference in Houston surrounded by TSA agents, Noem praised those who “stepped up, took on extra shifts, and showed up every day.” She confirmed that these bonuses will be in addition to their back pay and that similar recognitions will be made nationwide.

“Our commitment is to recognize employees across the country,” Noem stated, emphasizing the department’s intent to reward every TSA official who contributed during the shutdown. “We aim to support them financially with a bonus check, helping them and their families regain stability,” she added.

Noem highlighted the efforts of “tens of thousands” of employees who continued their duties over the past six weeks. When questioned about whether this referred to those who did not take sick leave or stay home, she clarified that the recognition isn’t solely based on attendance.

“We will evaluate every individual who provided exceptional service during this challenging time,” she explained.

Recent weeks have seen significant disruptions in air travel, with the Federal Aviation Administration restricting flights due to a shortage of air traffic controllers and lengthy security lines causing delays at many airports.

President Trump said Monday that any air traffic controllers that called out of work would be “substantially docked.” He also said he would recommend $10,000 bonuses for those who continued to show up to work, despite not being paid during the shutdown.
