Tragedy struck Roosevelt Island on Saturday evening when a fire claimed the life of one individual and left three firefighters injured.

Firefighters were dispatched to a residential building on Main St. near River Rd. at approximately 6:04 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered one person had succumbed to the blaze, according to the FDNY.

In response to the incident, Council member Julie Menin expressed her condolences, stating, “Our community is once again grieving the loss of a neighbor due to a fire, this time at 560 Main Street on Roosevelt Island. My thoughts are with the bereaved family and those who have been hospitalized,” she shared on social media platform X.

The injured firefighters were promptly taken to nearby hospitals, where they received treatment for moderate injuries sustained while battling the fire.

By 7:39 p.m., firefighters had successfully brought the fire under control. However, the cause of the fire remains under investigation by fire marshals.

This incident follows another tragic fire earlier that same day, which took the life of an 86-year-old woman in her sixth-floor apartment at NYCHA’s Queensbridge South Houses, located on 12th St. near 41st Ave. in Queens, shortly after 2:15 a.m.

EMS rushed the woman to Mount Sinai Queens hospital, where she died a short time later. Her name was not immediately disclosed.

The Roosevelt Island fatality was the fifth fire-related death in New York City in the past week.
