A heated altercation over chickens turned violent when gunfire erupted outside a Port St. Lucie bar late at night, authorities reported.

In the early hours at Harper’s Pub in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, an unusual argument about egg-laying chickens led to shots being fired, according to police accounts.

Officers responded to a 911 call from 44-year-old Peter Riera around 2:48 a.m. on November 4. Riera claimed he had been robbed and was being pursued. Upon arriving, police discovered Riera brandishing a loaded firearm.

Three individuals, comprised of two men and one woman, were also present at the scene and were taken into custody. Officials stated that Riera discharged his weapon four times as the group attempted to flee, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Witnesses recounted that the group engaged in conversation with Riera, whom they had just met and nicknamed “Farmer Pete.” This casual chat about chickens and egg production quickly escalated. One witness described how Riera became increasingly upset, accusing them of trying to deceive him, before drawing a gun.

During the investigation, officers discovered four spent shell casings in the bar’s parking lot. Riera was subsequently arrested and now faces charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, among other legal issues.
