Weighted shelves are among a series of high-technology measures being trialled by an Aussie supermarket giant to crackdown on professional thieves.

Coles has initiated a trial of cutting-edge anti-theft measures at its Highpoint West location in Melbourne’s western region, focusing on identifying suspicious customer activities to deter habitual thieves.

In the Maribyrnong branch, premium products such as baby formula and meat are now displayed on specially designed weighted shelves to prevent theft.

Additionally, advanced smart gates are in operation at numerous Coles checkout areas, effectively preventing customers from exiting without completing payment for their purchases.

Coles has clarified that the intensive surveillance efforts are not aimed at minor offenders.

“We are dealing with organized crime groups that frequently target our stores, seizing large quantities of valuable items to resell,” explained Swindells.

“This is a serious criminal issue, particularly prevalent in Victoria, and it has persisted for over a year,” he added.

Shoplifting in Victoria accounts for 71 per cent of all organised retail crime nationally, according to Coles.

“We’re not introducing screens and cameras for the sake of it, this is not Big Brother, trying to overreach and track everyone in every instance,” Swindells said.

“This is about making sure it’s safe environment to shop and work in.”
