Disturbing moment woman plunges 20ft from faulty rollercoaster

A chilling video has surfaced showing the terrifying moment a woman was flung 20 feet from a malfunctioning rollercoaster, an incident that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries in Sweden.

The shocking event unfolded at Stockholm’s Gröna Lund amusement park on June 25, 2023.

The disaster struck when fourteen individuals were aboard the Jetline rollercoaster. A support arm beneath one of the cars broke, causing the train to abruptly halt and partially derail.

Among the passengers, Karin Elmegard, who was riding alongside her husband Mikael, was ejected from the last car. Her husband managed to avoid a similar fate by clinging to a beam.

Disturbing footage reveals bystanders gazing upward in disbelief and swiftly moving away as the rollercoaster’s framework shook. Just moments later, the video captures Mrs. Elmegard’s tragic fall to the ground.

A woman in her thirties lost her life, while nine others, including Mrs. Elmegard, sustained injuries in the harrowing accident.

The trial against Gröna Lund and two other companies began on 10 November, with CCTV footage of Mrs Elmegard’s fall replayed in court.

Speaking to local media, Mr Elmegard said: ‘It was horrifying to see my wife fall out of the car, especially from such a height.

‘When I saw her lying on the ground, her face covered in blood, I didn’t know if she had survived. It was a terrible impact.’

Moments before she plunged six metres, Mrs Elmegard became panicked after first spotting an object falling from one of the cars.

She told local media: ‘I remember falling towards the grass, with it rushing up at me at a terrifying speed.

‘I don’t think I would have survived if I had fallen onto something harder, like the tracks.’

Following the accident, Mrs Elmegard underwent surgery after a ‘physically painful and mentally exhausting’ stay in hospital.

Despite having her injuries treated, she claims she still struggles with simple everyday tasks.

Prosecutors are seeking a total corporate fine of 18 million SEK (£1.45million) from Gröna Lund, alleging the amusement park failed to meet safety standards for ride components.

All three companies deny wrongdoing, with Gröna Lund so far refusing to pay compensation to the victims.

Mr Elmegard added: ‘We’re glad this trial is finally underway so we can settle the question of responsibility once and for all.

‘We feel it’s important that someone is held accountable. This should never be allowed to happen.’

Meanwhile, a Belgian thrill-seeker who tackled one of the world’s ‘most dangerous’ fairground rides revealed he’d give it a second whirl – despite admitting he felt as if it could have collapsed at any moment.

Robin Demyttenaere, 33, from Aalter, has spent a whopping £87,000 on more than 5,000 rides across the globe, and most recently set his sights on ‘The Wave’ – a notoriously risky thrill ride at a funfair in Medan, Indonesia.

The daredevil took it on during a three-month trip through Asia, visiting countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore – all for just £9,000.
