In a surprising political twist this November, New York City witnessed the election of a Marxist as mayor. While many have zeroed in on Zohran Mamdani’s connections to Islamist groups, it’s equally important to scrutinize the substantial backing he received from Chinese interests.
This spotlight on foreign influence isn’t to suggest that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was entirely untouched by the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) reach. Instances like the allegations surrounding Linda Sun, a former aide accused of being a Chinese operative, or the resignation of Cuomo’s campaign aide Lining “Larry” He due to his links with CCP-associated firms, underscore the pervasive influence of China in local politics.
The tentacles of Chinese influence extend across the political spectrum in New York, including among some Republican circles. However, the support for Mamdani was particularly pronounced, making him a clear favorite for the CCP. His candidacy was notably contentious, buoyed by a network of leftist activists and organizations with ties to Beijing. Through Mamdani, the CCP aims to stir political unrest within the United States, employing strategies of psychological and cultural manipulation as part of their broader objectives.
Backing Mamdani was the Singham Network, a coalition of far-left entities bankrolled by Neville “Roy” Singham, a billionaire based in Shanghai with CCP connections. Singham is currently facing federal scrutiny over allegations of funding nationwide riots. The organizations under this network’s umbrella include the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), the ANSWER Coalition, Code Pink, and The People’s Forum. Additionally, Mamdani’s association with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) aligns him with these Beijing-linked groups.
