In the tranquil community of Vero Beach, Florida, a tragic incident unfolded last week that has left the local community in shock and mourning. A locksmith, 76-year-old David Long, who was known for his unwavering commitment and gentle nature, succumbed to injuries he sustained while assisting sheriff’s deputies during an eviction. This marks the third fatality from the unsettling shooting, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

On a fateful Friday morning, deputies arrived to carry out an eviction when they were met with unexpected violence. Among those killed was Indian River County Sheriff’s Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a dedicated officer who had served the agency for 25 years. The man responsible, Michael Halberstam, also met his demise a day later from wounds sustained during the altercation, according to Sheriff Eric Flowers.

Deputy Florentino Arizpe, another officer involved in the incident, was injured after being shot in the shoulder. Fortunately, he was able to recover sufficiently to be discharged from the hospital over the weekend, providing a glimmer of relief amid the sorrow.

Investigations revealed that the sheriff’s office had been called to the residence seven times in the past month, with most calls reportedly made by Halberstam’s mother expressing concerns about her son. Despite this history, the deputies did not anticipate any violent resistance during the eviction process, explained Sheriff Flowers during a press briefing.

In the wake of the tragedy, questions remain unanswered about the safety measures taken by the officers and the locksmith. Sheriff Flowers has yet to clarify whether Sweeting-Mashkow and Long were equipped with protective gear. As of Monday morning, the sheriff’s office has not provided further details in response to inquiries.

Flowers did not say in his post if Sweeting-Mashkow and Long were wearing protective gear, and the sheriff’s office did not respond to an email on the matter Monday morning.
