A mural at Sydney’s Redfern train station has been taken down after being criticized as “AI slop.”

Initially, the artwork seemed to capture an Aussie Christmas, complete with typical Australian symbols like Santa, thongs, and beach umbrellas, suggesting it was crafted by a human artist.

However, upon closer inspection, observers identified signs that the mural was generated by artificial intelligence. Notable oddities included a kangaroo with a koala’s head and an Australian flag inexplicably floating in mid-air.

Additionally, a creature resembling a bandicoot appeared on the mural, with its limbs oddly detached from its body.

The mural drew attention online after being criticized as “AI slop” on the Reddit board r/sydney.

This term is used to describe low-quality content produced by generative AI, often characterized by noticeable errors.

“Sydney Trains’ Redfern Station staff have displayed artwork for several years to help create a positive end-of-year atmosphere for our customers,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said in a statement.

“We received feedback about this year’s display and, in response, have decided to remove the artwork,” the spokesperson said.
